{Sunshine and Carousels, a magical studio tour.}

Good afternoon! Today’s post is super encouraging and beautiful ~ I’m featuring Erin’s studio, of Sunshine and Carousels, and it’s AMAZING! {happy sigh} There are so many parts of her story that stood out to me, and I know they will stand out to you, too! I found myself nodding in agreement, and often! I just love the way she thinks.

OK — enjoy the feature, and I hope your day has been fabulous so far!

Hello Gussy readers! I’m Erin Wilson the designer and creator behind Sunshine and Carousels the shop and blog. I just have to say that I am ecstatic that Miss Maggie has given me a chance to share a part of my world with you today.

Something I love about the Gussy Sew’s blog is that it’s so full of insights on indie business and handmade life.  These are things that I feel incredibly strong about and I always appreciate the different posts about the Gussy’s Sews studio and many many others handmade artists.  I love these kinds of posts because they just show the heart and soul and insides of the handmade/indie business owners and lets you feel like you are a part of their lives too.  So today I want to share a little bit about my journey to a creative career and show you a piece of my world.

I’ve been blogging for almost three years, sharing fun crafty projects and lots of sweet treats.  I didn’t have handmade business for the first two years of my blogging journey, but I always loved making things. When I was 12 I took my very first art class and fell in love.  I took one or more classes in school every year all the way up to college.  I was majoring in fine arts education and planned to be an art teacher one day.

Two years into college I changed majors and moved off. Met my husband, had a baby…you know all the good stuff.  Then one day I found myself yearning for that creative life and career again.  So I started a little hobby last February (2010), making sweet things and filling my etsy shop with them.  I soon started to seriously think about making this my full time job.  A few months later I took the plunge, quit my job and put my every free second into creating beautiful unique pieces and sharing them with whoever would take a peek.  It’s been such a whirlwind of a year, this month is my one year anniversary to being a full time indie business owner.

It has been such a wonderful year, my line has grown so much and I could not be happier.

Today I’m sharing some fun peeks at my brand new studio!!

This is why sharing this peek into my creative life is important to me ~

Last year, the same time I started my full time indie business my family and I moved into a tiny two bedroom apartment so that we could save money while I took the plunge.  While that part was great, my *studio* space was not so much.

I worked all year long in a tiny 4×5 foot built in (walk-in closet type of space) office to make all the beautiful things you can find in my shop.  At first it was great, but as my business grew the space seemed smaller and smaller and not very inspiring at all.  So today I’m sharing my BRAND new and much much roomier studio that I am in love with!

Something I really love in my new space, is that I get to display my ever growing collection of carousel horses, carousels and unicorns.  I love them, like an 8 year old…I know.

There’s just something about embracing things from your childhood that can be so inspiring.  All of these pieces are so special and meaningful to me and I love seeing them every day.

When my husband and I were looking for a new house these past few months, I specifically knew I wanted to find a home that had an amazing room for my studio space.  Something that I would feel cozy and inspired in.

When we found this house I took one little peek at this room and knew it was the one.  Look at those beautiful bay windows! How could I not be in love?  This room has amazing natural light and lets the sunshine in every day.  Which makes me very very happy.

My studio has a ton of golden yellow accents floating around because this color reminds me of perfectly sunshine-y days when the sky is blue, the sun is beaming down on you and the wind is blowing through your hair…the put on your sunglasses, roll the windows down in your car and turn up your favorite song kind of days.  Those are my favorite.

I love every single color out there really, but for my special space I chose to showcase a lot of yellow.  I made these giant embroidery hoops last month for when I showed at Renegade Handmade in Austin, they were just too pretty to stick back in a closet until my next craft show so I chose to hang them up and use them as organization space for my accessories.

Not only are they so pretty to look at but they are functional, too.

The last little thing about my new space is a little space to share my love for fellow artists.  I love art and quirky little pieces.  This is only a small portion of the ever growing art print and photography collection that I store in my home. :) I love to have a few little happy reminders of things that I love and artist that I adore to help give me a little extra inspiration every day.

I call my new studio… my happy place.  Because it is.

Thank for reading about my happy place, my shop and a little piece of me.  What I hoped from this sharing this post is that I could inspire you, all of you, to find your ‘happy place.‘  A little area that is just for you, whether you are a indie business owner, a hobbyist, part time crafter or book lover.  Just find a sweet creative little space that you can share your soul with…it will change your life.  I promise.

To find out how to make some of the fun little projects hanging around my studio you can check out my blog for fun DIY projects (like the colorful fringe garland hanging in my bay windows) and lots of cupcake recipes.

Thank you so much for having me Gussy!!

Great post and I’m in love with another blog! Thank you! And this has really inspired me to get my studio space put back together. I have a great space and I let my funk overwhelm it. It’s time to get back on the horse.

So pretty, I love all of the light… and I swear that while browsing craft fair set ups I came across a photo of your pretty booth because I recognize the yellow table covering and the yellow/blue fabric strip-valance… now I’m going to see if I bookmarked it! :-) Congrats on one year, Erin!
